Wizards announced recently that their next big release will be a collection of classic dungeon converted into fifth edition. This is a departure from the previous 5e campaign books, and we’re left wondering if there won’t be another campaign until fall 2017. Let’s hope that this small foray into other worlds means a departure from the Realms as Chris Perkins has promised us.

Preorder Tales from the Yawning Portal

From wizards.com:

There are many iconic adventures and stories in the 43-year history (!) of Dungeons & Dragons that current fans may not have ever experienced. If you just got into D&D in the past few years, you likely haven’t braved the Tomb of Horrors or climbed White Plume Mountain or fought Against the Giants. Even longtime fans haven’t been able to fully explore the Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan or the Sunless Citadel with stats and monsters updated for the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons.

Now you can jump into some of the most popular D&D modules ever created with Tales from the Yawning Portal. Releasing wide on April 4th, this 248-page book contains seven full adventures including timeless classics and more recent best-sellers like Forge of Fury and Dead in Thay, all completely updated and ready to run using the latest D&D rules.

The cover of Tales from the Yawning Portal was illustrated by Tyler Jacobsen. It depicts Durnan the Wanderer, the longtime owner and barkeep of Waterdeep’s most famous tavern. Adventurers from all over the Forgotten Realms gather in the taproom at the Yawning Portal to trade stories of their exploits and rumors of far-off treasures, some even from other worlds in the D&D multiverse. The Yawning Portal is the one place you’d expect to hear tales of the seven dungeons in this book.

Look for Tales from the Yawning Portal in your local game store on March 24th! Otherwise, you can pick it up on April 4th, and start running these classic adventures for your gaming group. Even if you’re in the middle of a Storm King’s Thunder or Curse of Strahd campaign, clever Dungeon Masters and players can take inspiration from D&D’s history to infuse traps, challenges, monsters and magic items from these adventures into any session.

Recently I had the pleasure of working with the folks from Geeks New England. GNE is a high-quality blog and very entertaining live-play podcast. In the last episode, GNE played through one of our Haunted Encounters in their “The Secrets of the Lionheart Inn” episode.

According to GNE’s DM, Jeff Venancio:

Legends from Aeramis is a D&D actual play podcast, run using the fifth edition ruleset for Dungeons and Dragons.  Join Camden, the blood hunter whose hands are always hidden within gauntlets of steel, Leander, the “lawful evil” cleric with a likely unhealthy obsession with death, Talia, the ranger with a painful past and her alcohol-loving wolf Nova, and Evathon, the wild-child druid who only has only recently attempted to rejoin society.  These heroes travel across the land of Aeramis, seeking coin and working to protect the world from the newly re-emerged self-christened “Black King.”  Legends from Aeramis is available on iTunes and YouTube, and on geeksnewengland.org.  Go Like their Facebook page for information pertaining to episode releases.

GNE can be found on their website, Facebook, and Twitter. We suggest you check them out! I mean they have a wolf with a drinking problem! What other podcast can boast that?

Storm King’s Thunder Reviewed

Posted in D&D Fifth Edition, D&D Next, Dungeons and Dragons, Product Review with tags , , , , , , on September 2, 2016 by boccobsblog

Storm-Kings-Thunder-Cover

This is a spoiler free review. I have read the book, but not DM’d the adventure yet.

From Wizards:

Giants have emerged from their strongholds to threaten civilization as never before. Hill giants are stealing all the grain and livestock they can while stone giants have been scouring settlements that have been around forever. Fire giants are press-ganging the smallfolk into the desert, while frost giant longships have been pillaging along the Sword Coast. Even the elusive cloud giants have been witnessed, their wondrous floating cities appearing above Waterdeep and Baldur’s Gate. Where is the storm giant King Hekaton, who is tasked with keeping order among the giants?

The humans, dwarves, elves, and other small folk of the Sword Coast will be crushed underfoot from the onslaught of these giant foes. The only chance at survival is for the small folk to work together to investigate this invasion and harness the power of rune magic, the giants’ weapon against their ancient enemy the dragons. The only way the people of Faerun can restore order is to use the giants’ own power against them.

Our Thoughts:

The Good

  • The Art is amazing
  • The story is well thought out
  • The plot connects to all 5e published adventures (even MoP)

The Badass

  • A lot of fleshed out NPCs that could be reskinned for other campaigns.
  • The body count is high, really high

The Ugly

  • No player content
  • A lot of plots and NPCs (not George RR Martin level, but close)

All in all this is a solid campaign. There are quests and side quests to keep your party busy, and the art and cartography are beautiful. But, while I understand we’ve moved away from the days of splat books and endless feats, a few new spells, backgrounds, and player options go a long way.
